Your friends and family may be surprised when you tell them how you spent your Key West vacation. "You went to Key West to snorkel and you saw shipwrecks?" they may ask. In most locales, visitors need their scuba certification to see a wreck. Typically, a wreck in 20 feet of water is considered shallow, but there are other options in Key West. The U.S.S. Alligator
Carrying 12 guns, the U.S.S. Alligator launched in 1820. She was part of the West Indies squadron to eliminate pirates from Florida. When she captured a pirate ship off the coast of Cuba, the U.S.S. Alligator lost her commander. One year later, on Craysfort Reef, the Alligator ran aground. The Navy offloaded valuables and then blew the ship up. Her remains are 100 yards off the shore of Alligator lighthouse. The reef is now named for the ship sunken off the shores of Key West. Snorkel the site and you will find the vessel encrusted in coral and surrounded by sea life. Some portions are only in 8 feet of water, making this a possible Key West snorkel site.
The Tile Wreck
No one has been able to identify the vessel that was carrying a load of tile from Barcelona, Spain, and so it is simply called "The Tile Wreck". It's believed to be a large ship that sunk sometime after 1850 because of the design construction and they type of chain that holds the anchor. Underwater archeologists have found the ballast, pieces of terra cotta, and tile at the shipwreck site. Now, in 5 to 15 feet of water, it makes for a great Key West snorkel outing.
